Paris-based artist Anne Nguyen’s Autarcie (….) featured four jumpsuit-clad dancers facing off in a frantic, ritual warrior dance. Hypnotic beats underscored a game of strategy as each used her specialty—breakdance, popping, and waacking—in pursuit of territory, power, and possible points of harmony. The inner-workings of this restless tribe unfolded into an emotional narrative as the dancers worked with and against each other, the space, and the audience.

GRAPHIC CYPHERS / SEPTEMBER 23 & 25, 2016
Anne Nguyen / Compagnie par Terre & Yugson

A new work for 20 NYC dancers made in The Bronx, NYC in collaboration with Yugson, commissioned by Dancing in the Streets and Crossing the Line.

Anne Nguyen and 20 NYC street dancers performed in a radical take on the hip-hop cypher. Playfully referencing the circle of dancers that surrounds an ever-changing soloist—the audience moved in and out of constellations of dancers who explored dizzying sequences of movement in ever-shifting levels and locations. For the audience, perspective, perception, and participation were in constant flux, with an intimate proximity to the action.

The work featured a new generation of Urban dancers from around NYC, and was made in the streets of the Bronx and hosted by the Bronx Museum of the Arts. Performances took place at the Bronx Museum and in the streets of the South Bronx on Friday September 23, and in Times Square on Sunday September 25.

Anne Nguyen collaborated on this project with Yugson, an award winning Urban dancer based in Paris, France.
