Shadow Casters is being produced in cities all over the world, including Bologna, Zagreb, Belgrade, Ljubljana and Graz. Dancing in the Streets was delighted to bring the international artists of the Shadow Casters team to New York City in July 2003 for a developmental workshop.

Shadow Casters is a two-phase project that culminates in a treasure hunt/city voyage that provides a multimedia framework for audiences to explore known and unknown corners of the city. Receiving one “live” or virtual clue at a time as to the next destination and being challenged to make a choice of where to go next, audience members embark on individual journeys of discovery throughout a city; traveling by foot, public transportation and the Internet, they inhabit multilayered and multifaceted stories in which the entire city is the lead actor.

In New York City, Dancing in the Streets produced an exploratory Shadow Casters workshop in July 2003. The five lead artists, in collaboration with an international nine-member team of visual, digital, and performing artists; historians; architects; and urban planners travelled the city, interviewed scores of residents and workers, and, most of all, built a common language and methodology that is the trademark of Shadow Casters.

The workshop took place at Columbia University’s Computer Music Center, at The Kitchen, and in indoor and outdoor sites throughout New York City. It culminated in a series of eventures, in which invited audiences were guided on indoor and outdoor voyages of choice and chance.
