(In case of rain, performance will take place at P.S. 15 auditorium, 71 Sullivan Street between Van Brunt & Richards St., Red Hook, Brooklyn) Rennie Harris Puremovement has dazzled audiences worldwide with its feats of virtuosic dancing, exhilarating energy, and breathtaking athleticism. The outdoor performances on Saturday and Sunday will feature Students of the Asphalt Jungle: selections from the company’s repertoire, including P-Funk, March of the Antmen, Continuum, and the title work, Students of the Asphalt Jungle. These works celebrate the vitality and cultural significance of hip-hop—a contemporary indigenous art form that emerged on the streets of neighborhoods similar to Brooklyn’s Red Hook. Harris, who has become an international spokesperson for hip-hop, learned the genre as a child on the streets of North Philadelphia where he grew up. He founded the Rennie Harris Puremovement company in 1992 with the goals of bringing hip-hop to the concert stage and of preserving and disseminating hip-hop culture through performances, workshops, symposia, and festivals. True to its mission, the company’s interactive performance on Friday evening will show the progression of hip-hop’s forms such as breaking, locking, popping, house, and stepping as they developed in different inner city communities throughout the United States, and trace hip-hop’s historical roots to African, Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Cuban, and Puerto Rican cultures. Friends of Coffey Park is a neighborhood organization that is working with City Parks Foundation’s Partnership with Parks program on refurbishing the park and bringing public programs to it. It is comprised of Red Hook community leaders and residents who have a longstanding partnership with Dancing in the Streets through Dancing’s 11-year Red Hook initiative. The initiative has consisted of an arts education program in Red Hook’s public schools, youth festivals, and original site-specific productions. The Rennie Harris Puremovement engagement is supported in part by Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour, Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation and with public funds from the National Endowment for the Arts.
